Yoke (706m), Ill Belle (757m), Froswick (720m) and Thornthwaite Crag (784m) - 12th October 2017
Distance 17km, Ascent ~800m, Time 7h
We parked on a minor road off the A591 immediately south of the church at Troutbeck. We crossed the A591 to find a footpath a few metres to the south, which initially ascends SE for ~200m and then turns NE to join the Garburn Road (track). The route over the summits leaves the Garburn Road at the Garburn Pass, ascending first Yoke, which is a fairly nondescript grassy dome. Next is the steeper summit of Ill Belle which has 2 impressive summit cairns and good views into Kentmere and across to the Nan Bield Pass. Then a short fairly steep descent and a easy rise to Froswick. The route up to the beacon at Thornthwaite Crag is clear ahead. Then comes a steep and somewhat slippery descent to the pass at Threshthwaite Mouth. From this descent there extensive views along the whole length of Windermere to the south and to Patterdale and Ullswater in the north. Rather than ascending Stony Cove Pike and an uncertain return route from their, we took the narrow grassy path theat follows Trout Beck back to Town Head and thence back to the car.
