Walla Crag (376m), Bleaberry Fell (590m), High Seat (608m) circuit 19/11/2015
Distance ~10km, ascent ~550m, time 5hrs
Starting from the car park at Great Wood on the shore of Derwent Water (NY272214) we were ready to start walking at 11:00.
We began by heading up through the woodland to Castlerigg - where I used to camp as a teenager - and then headed up to the top of Walla Crag and along its edge to Lady's Rake. We then headed across the moorland to ascend Bleaberry Fell and then on to High Seat. From here we started our return over Dodd and down Ashness Gill to Ashness Bridge. The upper section of the descent into Ashness Gill is very steep and craggy and we had to retrace our steps on one occasion when we came to a steep scrambling section which I deemed unsafe on slippery rock with minimal holds available - fortunately we did find a way round. From Ashness Bridge the path crossed the hillside above Derwent Water and back into Great Wood at dusk ~16:00.
