Easdale Tarn, Sergeant Man (736m), Pavey Ark (697m), Stickle Tarn, (Blea Rigg (541m)), Great Castle How, Little Castle How, Swinescar Pike, Silver How (394m) - 03/11/2020
Distance: 20.5km; Ascent: ~900m; Time 7hrs
We parked by the recreation area in Grasmere and walked along the Easedale Road and track to Easdale Tarn. Having ascended the gully north of Eagle Crag we had a choice of continuing up to Sergeant Man and then following the contours round to Pavey Ark, or to descend to Stickle Tarn and ascend Pavey Ark from there - we opted for the former. The weather had been OK upto this point but we walked through a head-on wintery shower while on this section making it rather less pleasant. We were concerned that the descent to Stickle Tarn from Pavey Ark would be treacherous, but it turned out to be pretty straightforward. Stopped for lunch in light rain at Stickle Tarn. We had intended to return via Blea Rigg, but a combination of wet weather and poor navigation meant that we ended up bypassing this 'Wainright'. The broad ridge between Blea Rigg and Silver How contains numerous small summits, some of which are named. From Silver How to Grasmere the path is fairly easy and passes through a beautiful grove of Junipers. Views throughout were very good, the waterfalls above Easedale Tarn were impressive following recent heavy rain and from the east Pavey Ark looks unclimbable as it rises steeply above Stickle Tarn.
