Bannerdale Crags (683m) & Souther Fell (522m) - 5th March 2018
Distance: 12km, Ascent: 550m, Time 4h
We parked at Mungrisdale. The ascent passes along the south side of The Tongue to reach the northern edge of Bannerdale Crags, where we entered the clouds. We continued along the edge of the crags as far as a cairn near the summit. We had planned to continue along the edge of the crags to rejoin the Glendermackin near White Horse Bent, but as we were in the clouds and there is no marked path we continued west over the summit plateau to a confluence of paths. Here we took the acute left along the north of the upper Glendermackin valley. We crossed the footbridge and ascended back into the clouds on Souther Fell. There is no distinct summit cairn on the plateau at the top of Souther Fell. We continued on towards Mungrisdale, but found we had to take a 1km detour when 100m away as there is no access across a field here.
