Seat Sandal (736m) and Grisedale Tarn - 19/04/2021
Distance 9.5km; ascent 810m; time 4h
We parked in a layby just north of Grasmere and headed up Tongue Gill Lane. The circuit can be done in either direction. We headed through a gate and across farmland (on a poorly marked footpath) and up along the ridge line directly to the summit of Seat Sandal. Descending to the north we did a circuit of Grisedale Tarn. Ascending a little to Grisedale Hause Gap, we then descended along Tongue Gill. (The path marked along Little Tongue is "closed" due to erosion). On the way down, we had some discussion about whether we climbed a hill or a mountain. Alison decided on the highly subjective definition that if she found it difficult it was a mountain but if she found it easy it was a hill --- she climbs a lot more mountains these days!
WIldlife: lots of skylarks and meadow piptits, and 2 drake Goosander on the tarn |
