Glasson Moss - 29/07/2020
Today we visited two nature reserves on the Cumbrian side of the Solway coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are several moss reserves here and we chose Glasson which is overseen by Natural England. A nearby alternative is Drumburgh Moss which is overseen by Cumbria Wildlife Trust. Glasson Moss has a direct link to Bowness Common which is said to be the most complete lowland raised mire in England, and is overseen in part by Natural England and in part by RSPB. It was a cool breezy day and mostly overcast, though there were sunny intervals (in which many of the pictures in the gallery were taken). We didn't see as much wildlife as we had anticipated but there were many specialised plant species and lots of lizards. We parked in a layby on the road to Glasson (the lower P on the map) and walked through to the viewing tower (by the upper P on the map) and then walked back. (The signage at the reserve itself does not show the northern boardwalk which goes right across the wetland). We thought this reserve was very good and would repay a visit either in spring for the bird activity or on a warm still summer day for the insects.
