Grange Fell - Kings How (392m) and Brund Fell (415m) - 16/04/2021
Distance 6km; Ascent 550m; Time 3h
We parked in the Bowderstone car park on the B5289 in Borrowdale. (A shorter and less scenic ascent is available from Watendlath). The route ascends fairly gently at first through some fine native woodland, with the mass of Kings How towering above and looking unclimbable from the west. A good steep stone path rises through the woodland as Kings How is approached from the north. The moss moorland of Grange Fell has 3 named summits: Kings How offers the best views and most people who are not bagging Wainright's will just climb this one - the view of Derwent Water and its surrounding fells is spectacular; Brund Fell is the highest and is a very pleasant stroll across the moorland; Ether Knott is the third, but as the route to is appeared pathless and the route down from it uncertain (and we hadn't brought our lunch with us) we didn't climb it.
